The Constitution versus the People
The Constitution provides a legal framework for PEOPLE to limit the powers of the federal government (and by incorporation of the Bill of Rights [via the Fourteenth Amendment], the states).
The Constitution in and of itself does NOT DO ANYTHING. Do not blame IT for the transgressing of its standards by the very people who have sworn to protect and defend our rights. Do not blame the tool. Blame the people who (mis)use and abuse that tool. That’s true for guns or hammers or a country’s founding documents.
BLAME THE CROOKS COMMITTING THOSE OFFENSES.
Yes, the Constitution is literally just a piece of paper.
Yes, few politicians today obey the precepts printed on that paper.
But you are wrong if you think we would be better off if the Constitution did not exist. It provides a NECESSARY structure for a nation to function. But while a defined set of principles is a NECESSARY prerequisite, it is not, however, a SUFFICIENT condition to preserve liberty.
A document enshrining those ideals does not enforce itself. Only human beings can act to maintain its viability.
Imagine trying to play poker (or any game or hoping to run any organization) WITHOUT a set of rules that provide guidance on what players may or may not do.
But since rules or laws or principles mean nothing to cheaters, IT IS UP TO HONEST PEOPLE TO CALL OUT POLITICAL CRIMINALS AND TO STOP THEM AND PUNISH THEM.
The Constitution demands much of those seeking to guard it against the predations of the statists and collectivists working to destroy both it and our rights. Neglect and abuse the Constitution, and it will rust away like a forgotten engine. Attend to it properly, and it will run smoothly for years.
For a value as important as freedom, such unrelenting vigilance is even more paramount and critical. It is a responsibility we all must assume and share…for our own good now, as well as for that of those who come after us.
